The short version

  • We collect only what we need to respond to your enquiry or act for you in a claim or dispute.
  • The chat assistant on this site is an AI assistant, not a solicitor. It takes your contact details and a short account of what you need, and arranges a callback; a solicitor reads every enquiry.
  • We set no cookies on this website, and no advertising or tracking cookies anywhere.
  • We do not sell your information. Ever.
  • You can ask us at any time to see, correct, or delete the information we hold about you.

Who we are

Good & Murray Smith LLP is a disputes-only firm of solicitors based in Dublin, established in 1895. The firm is regulated by the Legal Services Regulatory Authority (LSRA), and our solicitors hold practising certificates issued by the Law Society of Ireland. We operate from Regus House, Block 4 Harcourt Centre, Harcourt Road, Dublin 2, D02 HW77. For any privacy matter, contact gms@goodmurraysmith.ie or call +353 1 7644100.

This website is built and run for us by PageMax Digital Limited ("PageMax"), which acts on our written instructions and keeps its database in the EU.

What we collect, and why

When you contact us through this website

When you use the chat assistant, we collect your name, phone number, email address, and a short description of what you need. We use this to respond to you and decide whether we can act for you. We do not use it for marketing. Providing it is entirely voluntary; without it we simply cannot call you back. With your enquiry, the website also keeps your device's internet address and the identification string your browser sends about itself, so that spam and misuse can be checked.

When you become a client

Once you instruct us, we collect the information needed to act in your matter. In a personal injury or medical negligence claim this usually includes your medical records and details of the accident or treatment involved. We explain exactly what we need when we take your instructions.

When we act in a claim that involves you

We also act for insurers and other organisations in claims brought against them. If we act in a claim or dispute that involves you but you are not our client, for example a claim you have brought against someone we act for, we receive information about you from our client, from the other parties and their solicitors, from experts and witnesses, and from the courts and public records, as the case needs. That can include health information, which the law allows us to use because it is needed for a legal claim. We use it only for that legal work, because the law requires it or because we and our client have a legitimate interest in bringing or defending the claim, and we keep it with the case file. The law can limit some of your rights over this information, for example where it is legally privileged.

The chat assistant

The chat window on this site is an AI assistant, not a solicitor, and it does not give legal advice. Its job is to take your contact details and a short account of what you need help with, and to arrange for the right person at the firm to call you back. The full details of your case belong in a conversation with a solicitor.

A solicitor at the firm reads every enquiry and decides what happens next. No decision about you is ever made by software. If what you type includes health details (for example, about an injury or your medical treatment), Irish law permits a law firm to receive that in connection with a possible legal claim, and we treat it with the confidentiality every enquiry to a solicitor gets. If you are under 18, please ask a parent or guardian to contact us instead. The assistant's full privacy notice is on its own page.

Chats on our website. When you use the chat on our website, we keep the chat to follow up your enquiry and to improve the chat service. If your chat becomes an enquiry, the whole chat is kept with your enquiry. Every chat is also kept with names, phone numbers, email addresses and other details that could identify you removed automatically where they are recognised, and that copy is deleted 30 days after your last message. The removal is automatic, so some details, especially names, can get through. PageMax reads these chats only to make the chat work better. Please do not type anything into the chat that you would not want kept.

Under EU data protection law (GDPR), we rely on:

  • Contract: when we act for you, we process your information to do the legal work.
  • Legal obligation: the Solicitors Acts, anti-money-laundering law, and tax law require us to keep certain records.
  • Legitimate interests: responding to your enquiry, running the firm's practice, and running, protecting and measuring this website.
  • Legal claims: where information about your health is involved, we use it only because it is needed to bring or defend a legal claim or to give legal advice, which EU and Irish data protection law allow.
  • Consent: for anything outside the above (rare), we ask first, and you can withdraw it at any time.

Cookies and analytics

We set no cookies on this website, and there are no advertising or tracking cookies anywhere.

Like any website, the servers that deliver these pages receive your device's internet address and the details your browser sends with each request, and use them to send you the page and to protect the site from attack.

We measure how this website itself is used. When you open a page we record the page you are on, the page or search result you came from, any campaign tags in the web address, and whether you are on a phone, a tablet or a computer, and we record a tap on our phone number, on a link to our contact page, or on the button that opens the chat. To do that we store nothing at all in your browser, and we keep nothing that identifies you or your browser: we do not keep the identification string your browser sends about itself, only which kind of device it is, or that it could not be told. That record is collected on our behalf and on our instructions by PageMax, the provider that runs this website for us, as our processor. We do it to see which pages lead people to get in touch, and to tell when something on the site has stopped working. None of it is used for advertising, and none of it goes to anyone else.

The chat assistant runs in its own secure window, and until you use it nothing at all is kept in your browser: not a cookie, and not a marker of any kind. From the moment you use it, by tapping it open, tapping one of its suggestions, or typing, your browser keeps a short reference for that visit, because you have asked us for something and we need to be able to join it up: the conversation, any enquiry you send, and the pages you visit from then on are held together by that one reference. If you close the chat window, your browser also notes that for the visit. These are not cookies: your browser clears them when you close the tab, no other website can read them, they are never used for advertising, and they are used for nothing else. When you do use the assistant, it also runs a security check from a specialist provider that stops automated abuse of the assistant; that check is not made until you use it either.

Our home page shows reviews of the firm from Google Maps. When you view them, your browser fetches each reviewer's photo directly from Google, so Google receives your device's internet address and the basic details your browser sends with any request, as it does for any picture it serves. The photos are fetched without telling Google which page you are on, we send Google nothing else about you, and the photos set no cookies. Links to other websites, such as Google Maps and LinkedIn, take you to services with privacy policies of their own.

Who we share it with

We do not sell your information. We share it only where the work or the law requires:

  • Barristers, doctors and other experts we instruct on your matter.
  • The other parties to a claim, their solicitors and their insurers, and mediators, where the legal work requires it.
  • The courts, the LSRA, the Injuries Resolution Board, the Revenue Commissioners, and similar public bodies, where the legal work requires it.
  • Our regulators and insurers, where required by law or professional rules.
  • PageMax, which runs this website and the chat assistant for us, and our other IT providers, all under written contracts holding them to the same data-protection standards we are held to.

How long we keep it

If you contact us but do not become a client, we keep your enquiry, including any chat conversation, for 12 months and then delete it.

If you instruct us, we keep your file for the period required by the Solicitors Acts, our regulator, and our professional indemnity insurer, taking account of guidance from the Law Society of Ireland. We confirm the period for your matter when we take your instructions.

Where your information is processed

The firm's website database and enquiry records are stored in the European Union. The website's chat assistant writes its replies, and the summary of each enquiry for the firm, using AI models run by specialist providers, largely on infrastructure in the United States, working for the firm's website provider under data-processing agreements, and some of the website provider's email and technical services are based there too. Part of the website provider's platform is hosted elsewhere in Europe, including the United Kingdom, which the European Union recognises as protecting personal data adequately. Transfers to the United States are protected by the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or the European Union's standard contractual clauses, and the AI providers never use what passes through to train AI models. You can ask us for a copy of the safeguards for these transfers.

Your rights

You have the right to:

  • See the personal information we hold about you.
  • Have anything inaccurate corrected.
  • Have it deleted, where the legal basis for keeping it no longer applies.
  • Restrict how we use it.
  • Object to how we use it, where we rely on our legitimate interests.
  • Receive it in a portable format.
  • Complain to the Data Protection Commission at dataprotection.ie.

To use any of these rights, email gms@goodmurraysmith.ie with the subject "Data request". We respond within one month.
